As a faculty member, you will likely have several opportunities to work with employers; faculty are often popular points-of-contact for employers looking to promote opportunities with their companies/organizations or set up on-campus visits. Below, we have included some helpful guidelines and resources to help you connect employers with our office and your students.
Referring Employers to Career Develompent
If an employer reaches out to you with questions about career development or civic engagement, or has an opportunity they’d like help promoting, please refer them to our office and/or forward their information so we can follow up with them. We can help them register for events, post positions online, and find other ways to connect with our students.
Referring Students to Employers
It is not uncommon for employers to contact faculty to request a list of their “top” students or alumni to be considered for internships or employment opportunities. At first glance, it may seem harmless to provide such a list to an employer, but doing so could potentially create legal and ethical conflicts that could put you and Simpson at risk and possibly hurt qualified students left off your list.
As a member of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), Simpson Career Development adheres to the legal and ethical recruitment guidelines put forth by this organization and we strongly advise that other Simpson faculty/staff do so as well. Download a complete version of NACE’s A Faculty Guide to Ethical & Legal Standards in Student Hiring here to learn more about how to address employer requests for candidate referrals and how to act as a professional reference.
Serving as a Professional Reference for Students
Faculty often serve as academic or professional references for Simpson students applying for internships, jobs, scholarships, grants, and graduate programs. To help you serve as a fair and effective reference, we recommend that you consider NACE’s Tips for Providing References article and consult their How to Write Reference Letters guide.
